Mattress technology has come a long way over the past century, and the popularity of memory foam mattresses has rocked of late. Before you make the purchase there are 5 questions you should ask the memory foam mattress supplier...

1. Does the Mattress meet UK Safety Standards?
You specifically want to be asking whether the material in the mattress has been tested to BS7177 fire safety standards? This ensures it will be resistant to medium hazards making it safe and suitable for use in all homes.
Without certification proving the product has successfully passed the BS7177 fire safety test, the mattress may unsafe to sleep on, putting the consumer at considerable risk. It is very important you demand to see evidence that the mattress has been tested to BS7177 standard. This should be available in the form of a safety certificate. If the supplier is unable to provide this documentation, walk away.

2. Know the Qualities of your Memory Foam Mattress?
There are various types of memory foam mattress which can differ greatly in quality. You should ask about features such as the density, hardness or softness, and any responses to temperature your new memory foam mattress may have.
More manufacturers are producing memory foam products than ever before, which is great for consumers because it means prices have fallen radically in recent years, however, buyers should remain vigilant as a lot of sub standard memory foam has now found its way onto the market.

3. Remember to Check the Density and Thickness of the Memory Foam Mattress and ensure it meets your personal requirements.
Density refers to how compact your memory foam mattress is. It is typically measured to inform consumers how much foam there is per square metre of mattress. Effectively, a lower density memory foam mattress will use less actual memory foam. A low density memory foam mattress is more likely to deteriorate quicker than a higher density one. It will begin loosing shape and eventually stop returning to its original form, meaning it will need replacing.
60kg/m is widely regarded within the industry as being a respectable density. Anything close to this should be of good quality. Be sure to ask your supplier the density of the foam and if it is not stated in any product description, buy at your own risk.
You should also query the thickness of any memory foam mattress you are considering purchasing. Generally, the more memory foam in the mattress, the firmer it will feel. In order to get the full support qualities offered by memory foam products, a minimum of 5cm foam is recommended.

Product Source?
You should consider where your memory foam product has been manufactured. Importing memory foam from abroad is now a popular tactic adopted by companies looking to drive down costs while simultaneously increasing margins. You should be very wary of such memory foam, as corners have often been cut during the manufacturing process resulting in a poor quality mattress which, before long, will need replacing.

Is Your Memory Foam Mattress Guaranteed?
As with nearly all brand new products, your memory foam mattress should be covered against any defects or problems by a one year guarantee at the very least. No Guarantee – No Sale...

Memory Foam Mattresses typically retail for more than a standard mattress would, however, the health benefits associated with a good quality memory foam product should justify slightly higher mattress prices
