Cocaine is also known as benzoylmethyl ecgonine, obtained from coca leaves and appears white in color. According to National Survey on Drug Use and Health in 2006, 6 million Americans age 12 and older had abused cocaine in any form and 1.5 million had abused this drug at least once in the year 2005. This drug is snorted, sniffed, chewed, injected and smoked. Cocaine abuse has many medical complications and no proper medical treatment is available for this abuse.

Medical complications
Cocaine’s effects last from 20 minutes to several hours even after abuse of single dose or for the first time. Mostly after abusing the drug for once, he can’t control the desire to abuse the drug for next time and this phenomenon of abusing continuous as serious addiction. Enormous medical complications are found in cocaine abuser. Both short term and long term effects are observed on the health of the drug abuser and few effects are discussed below.

Short term: Effects or complications are found even after usage single dose. Most frequently complication found in cocaine drug abusers are headaches, cardiovascular effects like disturbances in heart rhythm, effects of heart attacks, respiratory effects like chest pain, problem of breathing. Symptoms of dangerous disease are shown up as the short term complications in the body of abuser.

Long term: With high abuse of any drug leads to long term complication on health. Some of effects of cocaine drug abuse are frequent effects of heart attack, which leads to sudden death of the abuser. With high respiratory effects the heart beat stops suddenly and abuser can die in minutes. Cocaine abuser can be affected by seizure and can’t be able to walk for rest of his life. Long term complications due to cocaine drug abuse includes increase in blood pressure, chest pain, blurred vision, muscle spasm, convulsions and can be in state of coma.

Treatment for cocaine drug abuse
Some countries provide pharmacological approaches as a treatment for drug abusers but few countries are still lagging behind in using these approaches. No proper treatment is available for cocaine drug abuse but pharmacological approaches can be used for controlling it. Good approaches and treatment strategies are to be assessed based on the health of the drug abuser. Based on the behavior analysis of the abuser, treatment is given by educating, controlling their feelings towards drug abuse with regular counseling. Behavioral therapy is considered as the best approach for treating cocaine drug abuse by evaluating the behavior of the abuser.

Extensive efforts are to be made for educating and controlling the drug abuse. Scientist should invent accurate and appropriate medical treatment for avoiding the death due to abuse of cocaine. The above information illustrates the medical complications of cocaine drug abuse and approaches available for overcoming the drug abuse.
