Do you suspect yourself or someone you know to have an addiction problem? How will you know if the substance you are taking is already addictive? How will you know if you or someone you know is already addicted to a particular substance? How can you tell if you already need to be treated?
I Am Addicted, Now What?
When you think your life is already attached to a particular substance, there is no doubt you are already addicted. Have you ever felt incomplete without drinking alcohol? Or taking drugs? Or puffing a cigarette? Addiction refers to the state wherein you think you can no longer function properly without your alcohol, drugs, cigarette or whatever substance you are addicted to.
If you have already identified that you have an addiction and tried to stop already but you simply can’t, you need to be treated alright. You will know that you need a treatment if the substance you are addicted to is already threatening and controlling your life. To be able to confirm and clear your concerns about addiction treatment, you need to consult an addiction counsellor.
The counsellor will help you identify your addiction and help you cope up with the withdrawal process. There might be a need to get treated in an addiction rehab centre or detox centre. To clear things up, you need to ask the counsellor all questions that are bothering you. You shouldn’t hold back. Ask everything that you want to know about the treatment.
There are various addiction treatments in rehabilitation centres and surely you will find one that will best suit your needs. More often than not, most treatments cover the following:
- Explanation of how drugs, alcohol, nicotine and other addictive substances affect your health, your life and the people around you;
- Find a suitable treatment for your addiction needs;
- Help you find other services that can help you battle your addiction;
- Help you set goals about quitting your addiction permanently;
- Help manage withdrawal symptoms and side effects;
- Open your eyes about the positive effects of the treatment; and
- Help you cope up with an addiction-free life after the treatment.
Drug, alcohol and nicotine addiction are treatable. You don’t have to deal with these addictions for life. You should just take the first move, consult a counsellor. Also don’t forget to inform your family and friends about your decision to quit. You will need their help throughout the process.
