On the average, there have been estimates that the total number of condoms manufactured globally reaches about 6 billion. It is not yet ascertained how the distribution of the products is allotted worldwide. Manufacturers find it very convenient that they are making condoms with just one standard sizing requirement. That equates to better margins and revenues because there would not be additional costs for making other sizes. There also are also no additional expenses for packaging to distinguish and separate different sizes.
But there is now an ongoing debate and deliberation on whether manufacturers would be allowed to make more than one standard size of condoms. The issue to be considered is a valid topic for debate, and standardizing more than one size should be considered.
There have been surveys and studies conducted in some countries that show that many men confess that they dread using condoms that are either too fit or too loose when worn. Because there is only one standard size of condoms distributed globally, there are now problems being encountered by men whose sizes are too large or too small to fit the condoms. For the larger males, wearing tight condoms provide intense discomfort. For men with smaller sizes, wearing loose condoms can be a problem because there is also discomfort and lack of sensation. Incorrect sizing can also lead to higher risk of breakage and condom error.
Is the world ready for different sizes of condoms? The answer can be a very resounding ‘yes’. While in the past, there were no major issues, concerns and complaints, probably because the usage of condoms was not that popular, nowadays, focus should be given to sizes. That is because men find size a very important factor when using condoms. Some birth control advocates assert that if manufacturing and selling sizes could contribute to making the use of condoms more common and accepted worldwide, then people should be provided for with demands to make them more comfortable in using the rubber latex.
It should be noted that most condoms will fit most men. There is only a small percentage of the population who would substantially benefit from standardizing more than one condom size. However, beyond the issue of just a simple fit, there is also the issue of comfortability and peace of mind. These issues loom large for condom manufacturers and they are now seeking to respond to market demands by looking at differing condom sizes.
Whether it is valid science or just a new marketing scheme, gone are the days when manufacturers neglect calls for bigger sizes of condoms. Now, it has proven that indeed, some men find it uncomfortable to use condoms that are too tight for them. To some, the tightness makes intercourse less exciting and enjoyable.
The International Organization for Standardization, a Geneva, Switzerland-based group setting standards in everything, is working double time to respond and implement solutions to this problem as soon as possible. Through the intervention of the group, it is expected that in the coming years, men would not complain about condoms being too tight or too loose on them. It is hoped that societies would not put undue burden on facilitating safe sex by helping men buy condoms with sizes fit for them.
