Toddler won't eat

Q.
My daughter is twenty months old. I am very frustrated because I am worried that she is not getting enough to eat. She chews everything up and then spits it out. EVERYTHING! She's not gaining very much weight. She's still in a size three diaper, the same size that she has been in since she was six months old. I have also raised two boys who were picky eaters, but I never had this problem with them. They only had a few foods that they liked, but at least they actually swallowed them! She is still on the bottle. I give her a toddler formula, because I am afraid that she still needs it as a supplement. She also takes the liquid vitamins prescribed by her doctor. I have tried to discuss this with her doctor, but the nurse only laughed at me and said that she would discuss it with her doctor but never called me back. Am I worrying over nothing?

I would appreciate some advice on this.

Thank you,
Worried Mother

A.
Hello Worried Mom,

I tell parents to follow their instincts, but another opinion never hurts. Does your 20 month old still like to eat baby food? If she does go ahead and keep feeding it to her. Some babies refuse and don't tolerate finger food very well until 18 months old or so. If you are giving her a nutrition supplement drink make sure you are not giving it just before a meal or as a reward after a meal when she won't eat. If you feel like she needs the supplement use it as her snack, after nap or at bedtime. When she no longer needs it you can replace that with juice, milk or water.

Remember to give nutritious choices for her meals, don't reward her not eating with a sweet treat (just so you can feel she had something to eat) just let her go until the next meal or snack time and try again.

Little ones can play mind games with you even at this young age. I wish I could say something more to help you. If you feel your doctor or nurse are not listening to you, trying another couldn't hurt.
